Most aviation accidents in general aviation are not caused by technical defects, but by a chain of human factors. This phenomenon doesn't just affect pilots. It occurs in almost all areas of human decision-making. People invest time, energy, and expectations in a plan, and this develops a natural inclination to see that plan through.

However, in the cockpit this can have fatal consequences.

Pilots who have already completed a large part of their flight often feel a strong internal pressure to actually reach their destination. Every alternative is unconsciously perceived as a detour, a defeat, or an unnecessary complication.

Yet the decision to swerve would often be the safest solution.

Why experience doesn't automatically protect.

A common misconception is to assume that only inexperienced pilots are affected by bad decisions. In fact, numerous studies by international accident investigation boards show a different picture.

While experienced pilots may possess greater flying skills, they can also develop a higher degree of confidence in their own competence. This self-confidence is generally positive, but it can lead to risks being underestimated or warning signs being ignored.

Particularly after successfully overcoming many situations, the impression can easily arise that one can still confidently master even difficult conditions.

Visual flight and snow showers - a particularly critical combination

Winter visual flight conditions place special demands on pilots. Snowfall not only changes visibility but also the perception of distance, altitude, and orientation.

Snow showers can vary greatly from place to place. While visibility may be good a few kilometres away, it can decrease dramatically within a shower.

Additionally, the horizon often disappears. The separation between sky and ground becomes indistinct. This significantly hinders spatial orientation.

This can become life-threatening within minutes, especially at low altitudes and in mountainous terrain.

Multiple approach attempts increase decision pressure

Another aspect of many weather accidents is the psychological impact of repeated approach attempts.

With each failed attempt, the willingness to take additional risks often increases. The thought of „making it next time“ becomes ever stronger.

At the same time, the mental strain increases. The workload in the cockpit rises, concentration and situational awareness suffer, while time pressure and frustration grow.

International investigations show that many accidents occur precisely at this stage – not during the first failed attempt, but during subsequent attempts, where the pilot becomes increasingly stressed.

The DECIDE model as a decision-making aid

In pilot training, the so-called DECIDE model has been taught for many years. It is one of the most important tools in aeronautical decision-making.

The model is based on six steps:

Detect – Recognise changes.

Estimate – assessing significance and risks.

Choose – Select action options.

Identify – determine concrete measures.

Carry out – implement the measures.

Evaluate – check the result.

It is particularly important to continuously re-evaluate the situation. Many pilots make a decision at the start of a flight and then do not adapt it sufficiently to new developments later on.

The DECIDE model is intended to prevent this exact pitfall.

The value of an alternative plan

Professional pilots often talk about „Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C“. Behind this is a simple realisation: it's not the original plan that determines the safety of a flight, but the quality of the alternatives.

Those who pre-determine which diversion airfields can be used, which weather limits apply, and under which conditions a flight will be aborted, make significantly better decisions under stress.

Especially in winter, the question shouldn't be: „Can I reach my goal?“

But rather: „What are my options if I can't achieve my goal?“

Modern technology does not replace decisions

Electronic weather information, moving maps, traffic displays and modern cockpit technology significantly increase safety. Nevertheless, they cannot prevent human errors in judgment.

Many accident investigations show that even pilots with modern avionics find themselves in situations that could have been avoided with better decision-making.

Technology provides information. However, responsibility for its interpretation and implementation remains with the pilot.

Lessons for General Aviation

The accident highlights several fundamental principles of safe flying.

Weather preparation must take into account not only current conditions but also possible developments.

Contingency options should be defined before departure.

Changed circumstances require a reassessment of the original plan.

Experience must not lead to overconfidence.

And finally, the decision to evade is often an expression of good flying skill – not of weakness.
