Use of lead-free fuels for aviation

Last updated on 13 April 2024
There are fears that leaded aviation petrol will no longer be available in the EU from May 2025.

AvGas is currently a hotly debated topic. Most private aircraft require aviation gasoline. While there used to be many different variants with different lead contents, today most aircraft use AvGas 100LL (low lead). However, it still contains lead, which is why there have long been discussions about whether this should be banned.

As a consequence, many older aircraft with more powerful engines would effectively have to remain on the ground. The European Commission is expected to make a decision on this in the first quarter of this year.
