Petition on the LBA issue: "It can affect any of us!"

Last updated on 13 April 2024
In an interview, lawyer and aviation expert Stefan Hinners discusses the long waiting times for medical fitness decisions from the German Federal Aviation Authority (LBA), which can have considerable professional and personal consequences for pilots.

Even minor medical abnormalities can lead to pilots temporarily losing their licence until the LBA makes a decision - a process that can take years. Hinners regularly assists pilots who are confronted with such delays and criticises the LBA's inefficient processing. He argues that the problem is not due to a lack of personnel, but to organisational and structural deficiencies, and emphasises that similar decisions are made much more quickly in other European countries.

The situation leads to considerable professional and personal stress for the pilots concerned. Hinners is calling for an improvement in the situation through more efficient processes and greater transparency in order to restore trust in the authority. A petition with over 14,000 signatures emphasises the urgency of the matter.
