With a recent publication, the procedures for radio communication failure in German airspace have been comprehensively revised and specified. The new regulations define detailed procedures for instrument flights, particularly in connection with modern RNAV procedures, standard approaches, and aerodrome-specific characteristics. The aim is to increase the predictability of flight behaviour in airspace and further improve safety in an already critical situation.

Revision of existing procedures

The failure of radio communication is one of those rare but potentially most challenging situations in flight operations. While the basic rules of conduct are established across Europe, there has previously been some room for interpretation in their practical implementation. The now-updated regulations provide significantly more clarity by refining existing rules and adapting them to today's operational reality.

The established basic principle remains central: After a radio failure, transponder code 7600 must be set immediately. The flight is then to be continued based on the last received clearances and published procedures. The main novelty is the significantly greater level of detail in the description of specific procedures.

Stronger focus on RNAV and RNP procedures

An essential component of the new regulation is the consistent consideration of modern navigation procedures. RNAV and RNP-based procedures now characterise large parts of IFR traffic, particularly in the approach areas of larger commercial airports.

The new provisions clarify that for granted clearances for transitions or „direct-to“ instructions, the flight must be continued precisely along the published lateral and vertical profiles. This expressly includes speed and altitude restrictions. The aim is the most predictable flight profile possible, which also allows for safe separation without radio contact.

Clear rules for incomplete releases

Another important point concerns situations where there is no complete subsequent release. In practice, there have been repeated uncertainties here.

From now on, the following applies: If only a partial release is granted, for example to a specific waypoint, the flight must be continued after reaching it along the subsequent published procedure segments. This ensures consistent behaviour without pilots being placed in decision-making situations that could be interpreted differently in individual cases.

Detailed procedures for complex airports

Particular attention is paid to procedures at major international airports with complex airspace structures. Specific procedures have been defined for several locations, which are precisely tailored to the respective air traffic control.

These procedures differ, for example, depending on whether a descent clearance has already been issued or not. In certain cases, a holding pattern must first be flown before the approach can be continued. In other situations, there is a direct transition to the standard approach route. Specific altitude assignments and defined waypoints also play a central role.

This level of detail ensures that orderly and safe traffic flow can be maintained even in the event of a complete communication failure.

Simplification through clear priorities

Another aspect of the new regulation concerns the prioritisation of flight plan content. Practice sectors or planned procedures that do not yet have explicit clearance will become invalid in the event of radio failure. This reduces complexity and ensures that the flight focuses solely on cleared and published procedures.

At the same time, it is stipulated that in the event of a planned change from IFR to VFR and insufficient visibility conditions, an alternate aerodrome must be approached. Here too, a clear, safety-oriented decision-making framework is provided.

Significance for practice

For pilots, the new regulations bring both advantages and increased demands. On the one hand, the clear structure ensures greater safety and better predictability in exceptional situations. On the other hand, it is clear that thorough preparation and a deep understanding of the published procedures are essential.

Particularly for flights into complex airspaces, it is crucial to familiarise yourself with the respective approach procedures, transitions and possible alternatives. The new regulations set a clear standard here, which is closely aligned with actual operational practice.

The revised procedures represent an important step towards greater standardisation and safety in German airspace. By precisely describing the procedures for radio failure, the behaviour of aircraft becomes more predictable and cooperation with air traffic control becomes more reliable, even without radio contact.
