NFL 2024-1-3205 - Temporary designation of an RMZ/TMZ on the occasion of German Unity Day 2024 in Schwerin and the surrounding area

Last updated on 8 September 2024
The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs has temporarily set up two Radio and Transponder Mandatory Zones (RMZ/TMZ) to protect the celebrations for the Day of German Unity 2024 in Schwerin and the surrounding area. These measures, which were taken on the basis of Section 16 (1) No. 3 of the German Air Traffic Regulations (LuftVO), are intended to ensure the safety of the airspace during the events. The details of the designated areas are described below.

1. "RMZ/TMZ Schwerin"

The area RMZ/TMZ Schwerin is realised by a Circle with a radius of 12 nautical miles (NM) around the point 53°37'28" N, 011°25'07" O described. The vertical boundary extends from the floor surface (GND) up to FL100 (about 10,000 feet).

  • ExceptionsThe Airspace D (control zone) Lübeck-Blankensee and the already existing area with flight restrictions "ED-R Schwerin" are excluded from the RMZ/TMZ.
  • Temporal effectiveness:
    1. October 2024: 08:00 to 22:00 UTC
    1. October 2024: 07:00 to 22:00 UTC
    1. October 2024: 07:00 to 16:00 UTC

2. "RMZ/TMZ Schloss Bothmer"

The area RMZ/TMZ Bothmer Castle extends over a Circle with a radius of 12 NM around the point 53°57'32" N, 011°09'34" O. Here too, the vertical limit ranges from GND to FL100.

  • ExceptionsThe area with flight restrictions "ED-R Schloss Bothmer" is excluded from this regulation.
  • Temporal effectiveness:
    1. October 2024: 14:30 to 22:00 UTC

3. adjustments to the regulations

Changes, such as a shortening of the temporal effectiveness or a reduction in the vertical limitation of the RMZ/TMZ, are recognised by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Police and announced by the DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH per NOTAM published. Information on the current status of the RMZ/TMZ can be obtained via the Frequencies 132.650 MHz or 125.100 MHz (Langen Flight Information Service).

4. regulations for flights within the RMZ/TMZ

All aircraft travelling to Visual flight rules (VFR) within the described RMZ/TMZ must comply with the SSR code A6377 transmit unsolicited and on the frequency 135.600 MHz (callsign "Police Info") Keep ready to listen.

Before entering the RMZ/TMZ, a Initial notification which must contain the following information:

  • ID of the called station
  • Call sign and aircraft type
  • Location, altitude and flight intentions

Permanent hearing readiness must be maintained during the flight in the RMZ/TMZ. The Excursion from the area must also be reported. If there is no reply from the ground radio station, it is still permitted to continue the flight as long as the radio readiness is maintained.

Exceptions from the transponder obligation apply to:

  • Police flights or on behalf of the police
  • Rescue and disaster control operations
  • Ambulance flights
  • Flights from Model aircraft and unmanned aerial systems up to a height of 120 metres above ground

If necessary, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Police authorise further exemptions from the transponder requirement.

Flights to Instrument flight rules (IFR) are not affected by these regulations.

Conclusion

The temporary establishment of Mandatory radio communication and transponder zones (RMZ/TMZ) around Schwerin and Bothmer Castle will ensure the protection of airspace during the 2024 German Unity Day celebrations. These safety measures are necessary to ensure proper monitoring of air traffic and minimise potential hazards. Pilots should inform themselves in good time about the exact regulations and follow the instructions of the responsible authorities in order to avoid disruptions.
