NFL 2024-1-3107 - Special regulations for air traffic in the lateral boundaries of Class C Berlin airspace below FL1OO and at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on the occasion of the International Aerospace Exhibition 2024

Last updated on 5 May 2024
Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS) has announced special air traffic regulations for the Berlin area on the occasion of the International Aerospace Exhibition 2024 (ILA 2024), which will take place in Berlin from 3 to 9 June.

These temporary measures, which apply during the preparatory phase from 3 to 4 June and the actual trade fair from 5 to 9 June, affect Class C airspace below FL100 and Berlin Brandenburg Airport (EDDB).

Details of the special regulations

1. general procedures and restrictions

  • IFR/VFR alternate procedure: Within Class C Berlin airspace, IFR/VFR and VFR/IFR alternate procedures are generally not accepted unless explicitly authorised by air traffic control.
  • Clearance to fly through: In general, no through-flight clearances are issued for the Berlin control zone (CTR), except in exceptional cases where the traffic situation permits.
  • Working flights and special use: Flights that require air traffic control clearance (e.g. survey flights) are generally not possible in this area. This also applies to projects for the special utilisation of controlled airspace, even if long-term approvals have previously been granted.

2. arrival and departure regulations at Berlin Brandenburg Airport

  • VFR flights for light aircraft: Pilots of aircraft with a maximum take-off mass of up to 2 tonnes are requested to fly under VFR in order to achieve a continuous flow of traffic.
  • Limited traffic information: Due to the expected high traffic density, the aerodrome control centre can only transmit a limited amount of traffic information.

3. recommendations for VFR traffic

  • Alternative airfield: VFR traffic is recommended to use the Schönhagen airfield (EDAZ).
  • Flying around the airspace: OAT (Operational Air Traffic) flights are strongly advised to fly around the airspace in question to the west in order to avoid delays.

Significance of these regulations

These special regulations are intended to help ensure the safety and efficiency of air traffic during the busy event period. By introducing these temporary restrictions and procedures, DFS is ensuring that all flight operations run smoothly and safely despite the increased volume of air traffic.

DFS advises all aviation stakeholders to prepare for these changes accordingly and to keep the communication channels with air traffic control open in order to clarify any ambiguities or operational requirements in a timely manner. These preventive measures are crucial in order to both guarantee airspace safety and support the smooth running of ILA 2024.
