On 15 April 2018, a Cirrus SR20 and a D4 Fascination collided on final approach in Schwäbisch Hall, fatally injuring both pilots and destroying the aircraft.
The accident occurred due to a lack of situational awareness by both pilots and a number of contributing factors, including the complex traffic situation with IFR and VFR traffic as well as glider operations, inadequate or unclear communication and misjudgement of the traffic situation by the pilots. Both aircraft had Mode S transponders, but were not equipped with collision warning systems. The weather conditions at the time of the accident were favourable and did not pose a particular challenge. The accident emphasises the importance of situational awareness, clear communication and the use of collision warning systems to avoid air collisions.
