Changes in German airspace in 2024 - The new ICAO charts

Last updated on 13 April 2024
The airspace changes for Germany, which will come into force on 21 March 2024, primarily affect the areas around Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt and Friedrichshafen and are aimed at making air traffic safer and optimising it. These changes are communicated annually in spring and are the result of extensive consultations between various aviation authorities and interest groups.

In Berlin, airspace C to the west and east of the control zone will be lowered from 2500 feet to 1500 feet in order to better protect scheduled flights, in particular due to numerous airspace violations by visual flight pilots. There is an exception for the approach from the south to Schönhagen airfield.

In Dresden, airspace D outside the control zone and the Transponder Mandatory Zone (TMZ) will be converted into HX airspace, which will only be activated when necessary to allow more flexible use by VFR traffic, depending on the runway's operating direction.

Adjustments will be made in Frankfurt to improve approaches to runway 07. Part of airspace C will be lowered to 4500 feet above sea level, while the upper limit of the control zone (CTR) will be raised to 2500 feet. In addition, airspace C around the control zone will be converted from 1500 to 2500 feet MSL to airspace D, which will allow more flexible handling of VFR traffic.

At Friedrichshafen Airport, adjustments to IFR approach and departure procedures in line with European regulations require the introduction of a transponder mandatory zone with defined lower limit heights above sea level and an increase in the upper limit to flight level 100.

These extensive changes reflect the efforts to make air traffic in Germany safer and more efficient, taking into account the increasing number of private pilots and the various interests in air traffic.
