NFL 2025-1-3494 - Temporary flight restrictions over northern Germany at the end of June 2025: What pilots need to know now

In an announcement dated 23 May 2025, the Federal Ministry of Transport specified two temporary areas with flight restrictions (ED-R) in the Bremen flight information region (FIR). The temporally and spatially limited airspace closures particularly affect the north-west German area around the North Sea coast and the Jagel area in Schleswig-Holstein. The background to this measure is military activities as part of Bundeswehr training programmes and the associated safety requirements for civil air traffic. Details of the flight restrictions and important information for general aviation can be found below.

1st ED-R "SNAP" - Greater north-west Lower Saxony

1.1 Lateral boundary

The restricted area extends over a polygonal area with the following coordinates:

  • Starting point: 54°44'00″N 008°40'00″E
  • East to 54°44'00″N 009°55'00″E
  • South over 54°32'30″N 009°55'00″E
  • Continue in a south-westerly direction to 54°23'00″N 009°40'00″E
  • Over 54°21'00″N 009°26'00″E
  • Back to the starting point via 54°21'00″N 008°40'00″E

The area thus covers large parts of the region between Husum, Heide, Friedrichstadt and Büsum.

1.2 Vertical limitation

1000 feet above sea level to 5000 feet above sea level - therefore affects large parts of the lower controlled airspace and is particularly relevant for VFR flights.

1.3 Temporal effectiveness

  • 26 June 2025: 07:30-10:00 UTC & 11:30-16:00 UTC
  • 28 June 2025: 07:30-10:00 UTC & 11:30-16:00 UTC

2nd ED-R "Jagel" - Airspace around TaktLwG 51 "Immelmann"

2.1 Lateral boundary

5 nautical miles (NM) radius around the point: 54°27'49″N 009°30'59″E
This corresponds roughly to the radius around the Jagel Air Base near Schleswig.

2.2 Vertical limitation

GND (ground level) to FL100 (flight level 100)

2.3 Temporal effectiveness

  • 27 June 2025: 06:00-10:00 UTC
  • 28 June 2025: 07:30-10:00 UTC & 11:30-16:00 UTC

3. type of flight restriction

The following applies to both restricted areas:
All flights - including model aircraft, drones and other unmanned aerial systems - are prohibited.

Exceptions apply exclusively to flights with Prior clearance by the responsible air traffic control centre on Frequency 123.300 MHz (SCHLESWIG RADAR) for:

  • Military aircraft or aircraft on behalf of the Bundeswehr
  • State aircraft
  • Police flights
  • Rescue and disaster control operations
  • Ambulance flights
  • Flights to Instrument flight rules (IFR)

5. significance for general aviation

Particularly affected are VFR flights (visual flight conditions) at low heights and Sport and private pilotsaviation clubs, skydiving companies, gliders, model aircraft and drone operators. Tourist sightseeing flights along the North Sea coast or in Schleswig-Holstein must also plan the no-fly zones carefully and avoid them if necessary.

Pilots are urged to carry out their flight preparations with particular care during the affected periods and before take-off:

  • NOTAMs to be checked up to date
  • To compare airspace maps with temporary restrictions
  • Contact the responsible air traffic control centreif an exception is requested

Conclusion: Plan early and stay informed

The following applies to general aviation: Situational attention and up-to-date information procurement are particularly important these days. Even if the no-fly zones are limited in time, they have a significant impact on flight planning. Anyone affected should plan alternative routes or avoid the affected times.
