Especially for <strong>conventional instrument approaches<\/strong> (e.g. LOC\/DME, VOR\/DME) and for <strong>RNAV method based on DME\/DME<\/strong> demands the <strong>EASA<\/strong> in many cases a physical DME device on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until now, Garmin had to rely on third-party providers such as Collins, Honeywell or King to integrate DME functionality into its avionics solutions. With the new products <strong>GDM 450R<\/strong> and <strong>GDM 4500<\/strong> Garmin now offers for the first time its own solution that is fully integrated into the <strong>Garmin architecture<\/strong> is integrated - including integration in <strong>TXi displays, GTN navigators and G500\/G600 systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GDM 450R - the smart solution for general aviation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The model <strong>GDM 450R<\/strong> is for the <strong>Remote mounting<\/strong> and does not have its own control panel. It is controlled via existing Garmin screens in the cockpit. The compact design and uncomplicated system integration make the device particularly interesting for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Single-engine piston aeroplanes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>G500\/G600 or TXi users<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aircraft to be retrofitted for EASA\/ICAO-compliant IFR procedures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One outstanding feature: The GDM 450R can be <strong>Receive two DME frequencies simultaneously<\/strong> and additionally <strong>Scan up to three additional stations<\/strong>. This ability is particularly valuable for modern <strong>RNAV RNP<\/strong>-DME\/DME-based area navigation procedures - a plus point for operators who regularly fly in complex European airspaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GDM 4500 - robust high performance for turbines and helicopters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more demanding applications such as <strong>Business jets, turboprops and helicopters<\/strong> Garmin has developed the model <strong>GDM 4500<\/strong> developed. It features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ARINC-429 interfaces<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>one <strong>Environmentally hardened housing<\/strong> for demanding operating conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>full <strong>Compatibility with third-party systems<\/strong>e.g. Collins Pro Line or Honeywell Primus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes the GDM 4500 not only an ideal option for new aircraft programmes, but also a <strong>Attractive retrofit system<\/strong> for fleet operators and aviation authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retrofit made easy - modern DME technology without a complete conversion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both DME systems are also expressly available as <strong>Retrofit solution for existing installations<\/strong> suitable. Thanks to modern digital architecture and <strong>compact design<\/strong> they can replace older devices such as the King KN 63, the Collins DME-4000 or the Rockwell Collins DME-42 <strong>without complete avionics conversion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Native integration into Garmin displays also eliminates the need for additional operating devices in the panel - an advantage, especially when space is at a premium in GA cockpits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TXi display family gets 12.1-inch extension<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the DME debut, Garmin has also launched the <strong>TXi series<\/strong> with a new, larger model: the <strong>12.1-inch TXi<\/strong> complements the previous formats (7\u2033 and 10.6\u2033) and offers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More space for complex flight displays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Larger display of navigation maps, traffic and weather data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optimised display in split-screen mode<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The display can be used both as <strong>PFD (Primary Flight Display)<\/strong> as well as <strong>MFD (Multifunction Display)<\/strong> as usual in horizontal or vertical installation. The main target groups are <strong>High-end single-engine aircraft<\/strong>, <strong>Turboprops<\/strong> and <strong>Helicopter<\/strong>where panel size is not a limiting factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Availability and outlook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garmin announced that both the <strong>GDM 450R \/ GDM 4500 DME systems<\/strong> as well as the new <strong>12.1-inch TXi display<\/strong> <strong>from summer 2025<\/strong> will be available. Prices have not yet been announced at the time of publication, but are likely to be in line with previous DME systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classification: Why is this relevant?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By entering the DME market, Garmin is closing a strategic gap in its own portfolio - particularly important for European users who have had to make do with less integrated solutions to date.
