At the same time, extensive infrastructure expansions are often hardly feasible economically or spatially. Aviation authorities and air traffic control organisations are therefore increasingly looking for ways to use existing capacities more efficiently.

A tried-and-tested instrument for this is the so-called reduced runway separation. Under certain circumstances, the minimum separation distances between aircraft using the same runway are reduced.

Such procedures are by no means new internationally. Comparable concepts have already been in use at numerous airports worldwide for many years. With the current announcement, DFS Aviation Services is now laying the groundwork for broader application at the airfields it manages in Germany.

What does reduced piste staggering mean?

In principle, an aircraft may only take off or land when sufficient safety distances to preceding aircraft are observed.

These distances are used to prevent collisions, ensure sufficient reaction time and minimise wake turbulence risks.

The new regulation allows air traffic controllers to shorten these distances under certain conditions. This enables take-offs and landings to follow one another more closely, leading to better utilisation of existing infrastructure, particularly during busy periods.

This does not involve a relaxation of safety standards, but is a precisely regulated procedure with clearly defined requirements.

Three categories of aircraft

A key component of the new regulation is the division of aircraft into three categories.

Category 1 comprises light single-engine propeller aircraft with a maximum take-off mass of up to 2,000 kilograms. This includes many classic training and club aircraft such as the Cessna 152, Cessna 172, Piper PA-28, or comparable models.

Category 2 includes larger single-engine propeller aircraft as well as light twin-engine aircraft up to a maximum take-off weight of 7,000 kilograms.

Category 3 includes all other aircraft, including larger turboprops, business jets and airliners.

The respective permissible staging intervals depend on the combination of these categories.

Only in good weather conditions

The application of the reduced scale is subject to a number of conditions.

Weather conditions are particularly important. Visibility must be at least five kilometres, whilst the cloud base must not be below 1,000 feet.

Additionally, the tailwind component may not exceed five knots.

These requirements ensure that pilots and air traffic controllers maintain a sufficient overview of the situation at all times and that potential conflicts can be identified at an early stage.

These procedures may also be carried out at night, provided that all the necessary conditions are met.

Wake turbulence remains a critical factor

All regulations relating to wake-vailing continue to apply.

The new procedures do not expressly replace these rules.

Particularly when aircraft vary in size, wake vortices remain one of the most significant safety risks. Light aircraft, in particular, can be significantly affected by the air vortices created by larger aircraft.

For this reason, the wake-vailing spacing must be maintained at all times, regardless of the reduced runway spacing.

Modern surveillance systems as a prerequisite

Another important aspect concerns the technical equipment of airports.

Air traffic controllers must be able at all times to reliably assess where the aircraft involved are located and what the distances are between them.

Both traditional visual observations and modern ground surveillance systems can be used for this purpose. Many aerodromes now have technical equipment that enables precise positioning on taxiways and runways.

These systems enhance security and lay the groundwork for more efficient escalation procedures.

Concrete minimum distances for landings

Of particular interest are the specified minimum separation distances for landing aircraft.

In the case of light aircraft in Categories 1 and 2, a following aircraft may already fly over the runway threshold once the preceding aircraft has passed a specified point on the runway or is already back in the air.

For small aircraft, distances of as little as 600 metres may be sufficient.

For larger aircraft, correspondingly greater distances of at least 1,500 metres apply.

These values are based on international standards and were developed following extensive safety analyses.

Significance for general aviation

For private pilots and flight schools, the changes will likely be barely noticeable immediately.

At busy airports, however, the frequency of take-offs and landings could increase. Air traffic controllers will be able to make more efficient use of existing capacity in future, particularly on sunny weekends, during air shows or when there is a high volume of training activity.

This helps to reduce waiting times and avoid delays.

The measure also offers benefits to operators of regional airports. The performance of existing facilities can be improved without the need for additional investment in new infrastructure.

Part of an international trend

The introduction of the reduced slope-based pricing structure is in line with an international trend.

Air traffic control organisations around the world are working to make smarter use of existing infrastructure. Alongside satellite-based navigation, digitised procedures and modern traffic monitoring, the optimisation of separation procedures is one of the most important tools for improving the efficiency of the air traffic system.

Such measures are becoming increasingly important, particularly in view of rising traffic volumes and limited space for expansion.

Safety remains the top priority

Despite all efficiency gains, DFS explicitly states that safety remains the top priority.

The reduced time intervals may only be applied if all the conditions are met. Even minor variations in weather, piste conditions or traffic volumes will result in the normal time intervals applying once again.

Pilots must also be kept constantly informed of traffic conditions regarding aircraft ahead of them, so that they can accurately assess the situation at all times.

Conclusion

With the introduction of the reduced runway spacing scheme, DFS Aviation Services is relying on a tried-and-tested tool to increase capacity at regional and general aviation aerodromes. The new procedures enable more efficient flight operations without compromising safety standards.

For general aviation, this primarily means shorter waiting times and better use of existing infrastructure. At the same time, the measure shows how modern air traffic control is increasingly relying on intelligent procedures to meet the growing demands of air traffic.

Source references:
NFL

From July 2026, DFS Aviation Services will be introducing new procedures for what is known as reduced runway separation at the aerodromes it manages.
