More aircraft in German airspace again

Last updated on 5 May 2024
Following a significant decline in flight activity during the coronavirus pandemic, German Air Traffic Control (DFS) is seeing a noticeable recovery in air traffic.

In 2023, DFS supervised a total of around 2.8 million aircraft movements in German airspace, which corresponds to an increase of 7.7 per cent compared to the previous year. These figures were recently announced by DFS in response to an enquiry by Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa).

Revitalisation of air traffic

The current figures are a clear sign that air traffic in Germany is recovering from the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. By way of comparison: in 2019, the last normal operating year before the pandemic, around 3.3 million aircraft movements were registered. The pandemic led to a drastic decline in these figures, with only around 1.5 million movements in 2020 and around 1.6 million the following year.
